Shameless self promotion #3456 – paper on Harman and aesthetics as first philosophy that I mentioned in recent post

By Jon Cogburn

In this post on Harman on Žižek on Bryant I mentioned some of my work on in my forthcoming EUP book on Tristan Garcia. I've put some of this into a draft of a paper I'll be giving at the Southwest Undergraduate Philosophy Conference this Saturday.

Anyhow, the paper is HERE at academia edu and HERE at my yahoo web space.

In it I present an inclosure paradox for anti-reductionist metaphysicians and show how various contemporary figures map onto Graham Priest's four solutions to such paradoxes. Then I show how Graham Harman's version of object-oriented philosophy has a wonderful capacity to self-apply in a way that solves the paradox.

I suggest that Harman's work provides some much needed clarification to A.W. Moore's uncharacteristically inexplicit account of the class of "creative metaphysicians" which includes Nietzsche, late Heidegger, Bergson, Carnap, and Deleuze. I also briefly assay Derrida, who Graham Priest (on differance) and Paul Livingston (on Derrida on Schmidt) have already characterized as a thinker of inclosure paradoxes. I suggest that Derrida's more recent work on the event is another such case. Whether or not Derrida should be read as a speculative realist might come down to whether he does (or can) think of modal terms like possibility entirely in terms of epistemic notions like conceivably. While the issue may be underdetermined with respect to Derrida's texts, the door to a speculative reading of Derrida* is now wide open. In future work, I'd like to tie these interpretations to my colleagues Gregory Schufreider's (on Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Mondrian) and Francois Raffoul's (Derrida and Heidegger on ethics and on the event) work. Some of this is suggested near the end.

[My LSU and philpercs colleague Debbie Goldgaber is already building on the earlier work of Malabou and Hagglund to derive a new materialist reading of Derrida that is speculative insofar as it externalizes the notion of the trace.]
